Former BLAZE Bassist ROB NAYLOR Speaks Out
September 9, 2004BLAZE fan site BlazeFans.com has posted a brand-new interview with the group's former bassist, Rob Naylor. Several excerpts from the interview follow:
BlazeFans.com: You have mentioned that you are learning to fly planes — can you tell us more about this? What got you interested?
Rob Naylor: "I've been keen on flying since I was about 5 years old, in fact I've wanted to be a pilot as far back as I can remember. It's only now that I've been able to do anything about it due to time & money issues in the past. I got my Private Pilot's licence in June, right now I'm studying for my Air Transport Pilot Licence theory exams...these are the toughies! After that I can go on and do my practical commercial training."
BlazeFans.com: Have you ever regretted leaving — has there been anything you have missed?
Rob Naylor: "I recently got a DVD sent to me by John [Slater, BLAZE guitarist] of all the stuff we got up to in the first 4 years of the band. By the end of it, I have to admit I had a lump in my throat the size of a cricket ball! I do miss the rest of the band, and the good times, but by the time I left there was too much crap that went along with it, I won't delve too deeply into that."
BlazeFans.com: Have you had chance to listen to the [latest BLAZE album] "Blood and Belief"? What do you think?
Rob Naylor: "I think it sounds incredible! I was a bit hesitant at first, but it really grew on me, and I reckon the band has matured pretty well. What's more, Blaze seems to be finally out of the whole 'writing a couple of songs to please the MAIDEN fans' thing. It's also nice to see some more personal lyrics in there."
BlazeFans.com: You asked for probing questions — so I'll ask the questions we are all dying to know — can we have all the gen on your future musical movements?
Rob Naylor: "Well, as you might have gathered, I've been writing a bit of stuff with Steve [Wray, BLAZE guitarist] this weekend. I can't say too much about this at the moment, because we're really still in the planning stage. What I will say is that last summer, a couple of months after I left the band, we did jam some tracks, and sent them off to a guy who's the potential singer for this thing. He's sent back some ideas, and they sound FLIPPING AWESOME! Very heavy, with a modern edge to it (don't worry, no LIMP BIZKIT or the like! We're talking proper music!). We're planning to have some material available I think by early next year."
